What is the best way to divide African violets?

I have several plants that are over 5 years old and have grown too large to fit on my shelves. I want to cut them down. Also their leaves are beginning to grow straight up instead of out.

What is the best way to divide African violets?
Carefully remove them from their pots and take off most of the soil. Do they have more than one crown? If so, use a sharp knife to divide them. Try to keep as much of the root system as possible with each plant. Repot them in fresh African violet soil. If there is only one crown, remove the outer leaves and cut back some of the roots. Repot in a larger pot.
