Gentian Violet for thrush?

I am away from home so i cannot take my 2mth old to the doctor, but he has thrush its very apparent and i read online that you can buy Gentian Violet at walgreens and that it works very well. Have anyone else used this medicine and how much do i put in his mouth, I read that you use a cotton swab. Thanks.

Gentian Violet for thrush?
I talked to the pharmacist about it, as I was going to try it as well. He shows me the possible side effects, one is causing the throat to close if the baby swallows it. I know your supposed to swab it %26amp; then put the baby on his stomach so he can't swallow it- but I decided not to even take the chance. Death isn't worth it.

I just had thrush %26amp; was able to stop the pain %26amp; burning within a few days. My son was in pain while nursing, and that stopped within a day as well. My infection was even in my milk ducts! You take 1 oz distilled water (has to be distilled), and put 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract into it and shake well. You swab that on your nipples after every feeding %26amp; if any milk leaks. Let your nipples air dry %26amp; try to go braless. You also swab it on the baby's tongue every hour during the day %26amp; before every feeding (so he doesn't associate the bad taste with an aftertaste from nursing). The mixture usually lasts a few days %26amp; will help the infection from spreading back %26amp; forth between his mouth %26amp; your nipples as the extract kills yeast. Make sure as soon as your clothes get wet from leaking, that you change them %26amp; constantly use new burp cloths. Wash your clothes, his clothes %26amp; anything that comes in contact with the yeast in hot water, with 1/4 cup vinegar in the rinse cycle. Dry on hot as well. Use cotton nursing pads if you need to, not disposable with the plastic backs (they keep your nipples moist- and yeast loves wetness). While your dealing with this, use paper towels to dry your hands- as yeast can live on your hand towels. I take grapefruit seed extract pills 2x a day as well, and acidophilus and cut out all dairy products. The shooting pain in my ducts went away within hours, and the burning in the nipples took a few days. My nipples were bright pink (and I mean bright!), they are about 1/2 way back to their normal color now- 1 week later. I think the yeast is gone, but it just takes time for the nipples to heal. I'm going to continue the treatment for 2 weeks after all symptoms completely disappear, as I was told to do. I also heard that exposing your nipples to sunlight can help, but I don't think my neighbors would appreciate that.
Reply:You can use the violet. I don't think it is good as what the doctor can give you. He would prescribe Nystatin in liquid form and it works wonderful. Maby you can use the violet untill you can take your baby to his usual pediatrician. The only thing is be very careful with the violet as what ever it hits it will stain uncluding his nipples on his bottles. Make sure you have some shout or what ever spray you use for stains for your laundry. Keep lots of large bibs handy. The Q-tip is the only way I know how to put it on. I have worked with infants for 30 years and now I just help moms answer questions whenever I can. Good Luck !!
Reply:I used it when my daughter was younger. It work very well for treating thrush. The way I found out about it is when I took my daughter to her doctors appt and the doctor wrote her a prescription for thrush and told me that I do not have to get the prescription bcs there is a cheaper alternative that work just as well, Gentian Violet.

You just have to get a q-tip and coat the inside of her mouth with it. It can be very messy, I warn you LOL. Dont worry about your child swallowing it bcs it is harmless.
Reply:It works great. Not all pharmacies have it but I got mine at walmart in the first aid section(by the iodine) and I have seen it in the homeopathic section in cvs. Just dip a q tip in and swab the inside of the baby,s cheeks. You can put vasoline on his lips and around the outside of his mouth to keep it from staining but watch out for the clothes because it is very hard to get out.
Reply:I have never used it but my mom always told me thats what she used with us. As for how much to use, I've always heard to wet a cotton swab with it and wipe the inside of the mouth. I would ask the pharmacist how much to use when you purchase it, just to be sure.
