If you are wondering about the 'I' in ROYGBIV (the 'seven' colors of the rainbow), this is an interesting story. (Incidentally, British people use the mnemonic 'Richard Of York Gained Battles In Vain" to remember the same thing.)

There is no reason to say there are exactly *seven* colors in a rainbow. It is a smooth transition from one color to the next, so it is more an accident of what basic color *names* we have for the main regions we see. Most people do not see a separate region between Blue and Violet. And yet Newton called this region "Indigo." Why? Well, the general belief is that Newton was trying find a parallel with the seven notes of the musical scale (what we call an octave). So he was careful to identify seven distinct color regions.
Reply:no indigo is a dark blue.
Reply:No, indigo can be described as the blue black of the night sky. :)
