Attracting purple martin and violet-green swallows?

i'd like to hear from anyone in Washington Oregon area who is trying to attract these birds to reduce the insects for their horses. Particularly flies and mosquitoes. I saw 8 and 10 room swallow houses for about $100.00.

but the martin houses were $30.00 for only one nest box.

Any cheaper ways??

I grew my own birdhouse gourds last year to add to the ones already here on the property I purchased. EASY!!!

i dried them and bored out the hole and the drain holes. I then painted them white. If you paint them black inside it will keep the starlings out of them (so they say).

They like to have a nearby water source and they don't like to be too far from your house but not too close either.

I think about 30 feet is as close as they like and not farther than about 50.

Last year I only had about 10 Martins.

This year I have over 30.

Rumor is circulating that they really don't eat mosquitoes.

I do know they are eating some flying insects like flies and moths. They swoop down in the late evening catching them.

Beautiful birds.
