Has anyone ever used gentain violet for oral thrush and did it work?
Wow,that does bring back memories. I last used it in Junior High School, when fellow band members and I caught it from messing around with one another's instruments. Purple mouth disease, we called it, for the lovely shade of purple your mouth became- tongue, gums, and even the teeth take on a grape-ish hue. We had to use it for several days, as I recall, but it worked like a charm. I also recall it tastes a bit strange and makes everything else taste odd as well. I can also tell you it broke our habit of playing around during band lessons, having a purple mouth will definitely put a crimp in your social life, especially when you are 14. There is no way to look cool and with it when your mouth is purple! I hope you have luck with it, and I'm sorry to hear you have troubles. But thanks for the giggle and memory jog all the same.
Reply:I'm 41 and can remember my grandmother making me use it. She died when I was 10 - so that was a long time ago.



It worked great - I didn't have "thrush" but I would get small mouth ulcers several times a month.



There's also something else you could ask your dentist about - it's called "Magic" Mouthwash. It's expensive - but if you have insurance it's covered.
Reply:i haven't thought about gentian violet for a very long time. my mother used it regularly when we had anything going on in our mouth. it worked. many a day i went to elementary school with a purple mouth. even for a sore in the mouth, she used it for one day, morning and night.
Reply:I have had sucess mixing a small amount of peroxide with mouthwash. Ask your dentist or do some research on this. Gentain voilet does cause permanently staining on many items.





Thrush can make the mouth so sensitive that it is impossible to perform regular oral hygiene. Use a very soft toothbrush. It can often help to rinse the mouth with a diluted solution of 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide.
Reply:it works. milk of magnesia works also, just swab it around the mouth, i used it when my daughter had thrush. worked like a charm and didn't ruin her clothes from drooling purple all over!
