Hi, do i need one for an marine tank ? is it essential ? and what does it do ? Thanks....
Ultra violet steriliser?
agree with the first guy, the key to marine is excellent filtration of debris, using a string wet-dry filtration system to breed beneficial bacteria for the tank. however if it is just a fish tank ( no coral, inverts ) then you could use a sterilizer to cut down on harmful bacteria and pathogens. however doing so removes that waste controlling bacteria from the tank water requiring more water changes and even stronger water filtration with perhaps an ammonia and nitrite/ nitrate reducer. so that is the key for you then. fish tank then yes use one as well as keeping an acceptable copper level in the tank water for additional control. if you have a reef tank then by all means don't. you'll be killing the needed bacteria for breaking down the wast e of the organisms in the tank as well as the fact that several tube worms, crabs anemones and coral use these organisms as a food source. good luck
Reply:You don't need one. Concentrate on getting the best filtration.
Reply:Yes, it is well worth the investment, especially if you have a mixed coral and fish tank where you can't use as many chemicals to treat infections. UV sterilisers work by passing the water over a UV light which kills protozoa, bacteria and fungus spores reducing the over all levels of pathogens meaning your fish should get less disease.
Reply:If it's a Fish ONLY tank you can use one if you wan't but if you plan on putting any corals, inverts and so on in your tank I would definatly NOT use one.
It will KILL most of the food that grows in your tank.ie microscopic organisms that these animals feed on.
