What do the leaves look like? Shape? Veining? Glossy or rough?

Gentian Violet is a dye. Look at the first link.



There is a flower named Gentian but doesn't look at all like a pansy, see top picture on link 2.



Now for the fun stuff.

I think that you are talking about Prairie Gentian, also called Lisianthus, Texas Bluebell latin name Eustoma grandiflorum. See links 3 %26amp; 4.
Reply:When I first read your question, African Violets came to mind, but the next part of your question says it is a shrub, so it can't be an African Violet.

Reply:I GOT IT! it is "GENTIANA asclepiadea. Willow Gentian. native of europe and west asia. forms clumps of arching stems to 2 foot tall. dark green 2-3 foot leaves. blooms in late summer with deep blue, violet to purple blooms with yellow eyes. some blooms resembel stars. clumps can become woody with time.

the gentian family includes annuals and perennials from many parts of the world. many plants from this family have blue or purple flowers, including one persian violet.
Reply:Sounds like your leaves are getting burnt by watering and the sun beating down on the water-- or else you aren't watering enough and they are drying up.
