Why do complementary colors always look good together?

I know that colors opposite each other on the color wheel are complementary but i have not heard exactly why they do. (ex of complementry colors: red and green, orange and blue, and yellow and violet)

Why do complementary colors always look good together?
Good question.....thought provoking.

The effect is a vibrant or vibrating colors, each pop next to each other so I believe that the contrast yet close relationship is pleasing. If I were to guess further ,I would say there might be somthing in the anatomy of the eye where a number of cones are used to percieve color. By placing compliments, you are stimulaing a greater number of cones.

If you mix complimentary color together you get a nuetral color, you can even have dots of pure colors of each compliment and still get an illusion of grey, this wont happen with any other kinds of color combos. So I also think another pleasing part of the experience is that one is enjoy a bit of an illusion or tricks of the eyes where the mind had to work to understand somthing that seems a lil diff.
Reply:being opposite--the colors jar your eye..it's not so much they look good together-because secondary colors look good together-since they're related...but complementary colors startle you--you have to look--so your eye is drawn to them..An artist may use a complementary in their focal point--so you are drawn to it--and use secondary colors everywhere else--so your eye will stay there-content looking there-and not drawn out of the image area
