So I've been giving myself a little test on houseplants. (the test being to see if I can keep them alived, lol) Anywho, I have an african violet and mum plant that are both doing thrivingly well. I have transplanted them into bigger pots as needed, and they are ready to be transplanted again, however, they have surpassed the size of my window sill. I do not wish to put either plant outside... the mums would probably survive, but I don't live in an area where the violets would thrive. Is there a way I can divide the plant (make 2 plants out of one) or at least prune the violet so it isn't so big?
Can I divide african violets and mums?
Yes, you can prune the African violet back. Remove it carefully from the pot and shake off as much soil as possible. Remove the outer leaves with a sharp knife. Then use the knife to cut an inch or so of the roots from the bottom and sides. Make sure you leave enough roots for the plant to survive. Finally, add fresh African violet potting soil to the pot and re-pot your violet. Water it and it should be fine.
I have never grown mums indoors so I can't help you there.
Reply:I know with African violets that they can only be divided if you see more than one center in the plant. You can divide them by cutting with a single edge razor blade that has been sterilized with alcohol if this is the case. Do not use the same blade on another plant to avoid the spreading of disease from one plant to the next.
